The purebred Hampshire ewes are down from their summer pasture on the Johnson Ranch in the Routt NAfational Forest. It is almost time for the bucks to join them so they can have baby lambs in After a few weeks of romancing the ladies, the bucks return to their bachelor ways.

Noticed a mention of “The Johnson Ranch” in the Routt National Forest…As an original Carbon County ..Rawlins Wy. native…as a little boy…I use to accompany Peter Johnson and his mom and dad Elwood and LaNez Johnson up to their summer hdqts. near Columbine…Is the referral to the Johnson Ranch where you summer your ewes…the same ranch that I used to enjoy as a little boy in the 50’s…????

Yes. We lease that ranch from Peter Johnson, Elwood and LaNez’s son. Peter still lives in Rawlins and spends quite a bit of time at the ranch in the summers.

Thank you for the info…Peter and I both lived on 11th Street and our mom’s were close friends…spent many times going out to Jack Creek ect. ect. When John Niland took a state job with Ed Herschler…enjoyed his “yarns” and …of course…his book…”Sheep Camps of the Great Divide”…also went to school with the Stratton’s…actually ….I was bowhunting in area 21 in the early 80’s and ran into Joey moving sheep on hwy 71…we took a look at each other and that “oh I remember you moment” took place…probably jawboned an hour or more with Joey…!!! Also …Mutt Wren dated my mom for a couple years in the late 70’s after my folks divorced…soooo…to say I know the Little Snake country and many colorful folks would be an understatement…!!! Have a very Merry Christmas…warmest regards…Dick Larkin
