Fall Gather

Chica bringing down the cows

The cows and their calves have happily spent the last three months grazing on the Routt and Medicine Bow National Forest. October 1st is the off date for our Forest grazing permit. Friends and family help us as we bring the cattle down from their summering grounds.

from “Magpie”by Ian Tyson

“Magpie.
you know the West ain’t never going to die
just as long as you can fly.
You travel all around these hills
like a gypsy,
I don’t see the matter with that”

Battlements rise, keeping watch
Over cows and calves.

Little Boy Blue in Nebraska

or…the heifer’s in the corn stalks

A Little Boy Blue come blow your horn,
The sheep’s in the meadow the cow’s in the corn.
But where’s the boy who looks after the sheep?
He’s under a haystack fast asleep.
Will you wake him? No, not I – for if I do, he’s sure to cry
